Woodsy Wednesday: Happy Halloween Week (PNG Style)!

A Highlands Mud-man

Just look at the picture above, you would think we are celebrating Halloween this week in the village (actually celebrating Dedication of new training centre building). BUT, were not this is the traditional costume for SingSing (Pidgin word for a song and dance celebration) of some people groups from the Highlands of Papua New Guinea.  This is the Mud-man, and there are a few different folklores of how it started.  My favourite is one that says a man was fleeing from battle and fell in a mudpie.  When his enemy came upon him coated in the mud they ran away in fear that he was a ghost.  From then on out, his village would prepare for battle by coating their bodies with mud.
